Women's Health Q & A

What is women’s health and how does it differ from other types of medical care?

Woman have a unique set of needs when it comes to health and wellness. Some of those needs arise from matters of fertility and childbirth. Others are the result of a woman’s physiology and changes within her body over the course of her life. In addition, women are at an elevated risk for certain diseases, and Loanne B. Tran, MD, MPH is passionate about including patient education in her primary care approach, which empowers women to take control over their own health. It should also be noted that women often play the role of caregiver within their families, and can put their own needs aside as they care for those they love.

Why is it important for women to obtain regular Pap smear screenings?

A Pap smear, or Pap test, is an essential health screening tools for women who are over the age of 21. The test is conducted by collecting cells from the cervix, and then examining those cells under a microscope in a lab setting. If the cells show abnormalities, the physician may need to perform additional testing. Pap smears are the primary diagnostic tool for identifying cancer of the cervix. Because cervical cancer is curable if detected early, the importance of having routine Pap smears cannot be overstated.
